‘Stand against Hinduphobia’: Georgia steps forward with resolution condemning anti-Hindu hate
Congressman Sanford Bishop has called for stronger action against Hinduphobia while praising Georgia's leadership in combating anti-Hindu discrimination, highlighting the growing political influence of the Indian American community in the United States. Speaking at a community gathering, the longtime Georgia Democrat said protecting religious freedom and opposing hate remain essential as incidents targeting Hindu Americans continue to draw national attention.

During his remarks, Bishop applauded Georgia for becoming the first U.S. state to officially pass a resolution condemning Hinduphobia. The landmark measure recognized anti-Hindu bias as a growing concern and urged greater awareness of discrimination directed toward followers of Sanatana Dharma and Hindu communities across America.

The resolution was championed by the Atlanta chapter of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), which has spent several years advocating for greater recognition of anti-Hindu hate crimes and bias. Supporters argued that Hindu Americans have increasingly faced discrimination in educational institutions, online platforms, workplaces, and places of worship.

Bishop emphasized that combating religious intolerance should go hand in hand with recognizing the contributions Hindu Americans have made to the country's economic and cultural development. He noted that Indian Americans continue to play major roles in medicine, engineering, information technology, finance, entrepreneurship, education, and scientific research.

Georgia's initiative also acknowledged the global influence of Hindu traditions, including yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, classical arts, philosophy, and spiritual practices that have become increasingly integrated into American society.

Following the passage of the resolution, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp proclaimed October as Hindu Heritage Month, further recognizing the state's growing Hindu population and its cultural contributions. Lawmakers have also introduced bipartisan proposals aimed at improving the reporting and tracking of anti-Hindu bias within state legal systems.

The discussion comes amid broader national conversations surrounding immigration, religious freedom, hate crimes, and discrimination affecting minority communities. Hindu advocacy organizations have argued that awareness of anti-Hindu prejudice remains limited compared with other forms of religious discrimination.

In recent months, CoHNA partnered with law enforcement agencies in California to organize "Suraksha," a community safety initiative designed to strengthen cooperation between police departments and Hindu communities. The program provides guidance on reporting hate crimes, accessing victim support services, and improving public safety awareness.

The outreach efforts followed several reported attacks on Hindu temples and religious institutions, prompting renewed calls for stronger community engagement and improved communication between law enforcement and religious organizations.

Community leaders say similar educational events have expanded beyond California into New York, Canada, and other regions as Hindu advocacy groups work to improve awareness of hate crimes while encouraging greater civic participation.

Bishop's remarks reflect the increasing visibility of Indian American and Hindu issues within mainstream American politics, as elected officials from both parties engage more actively with one of the country's fastest-growing immigrant communities.

As discussions surrounding religious freedom and diversity continue to evolve, advocates say sustained collaboration between government officials, community organizations, and law enforcement will be essential to ensuring that all religious communities feel protected and represented across the United States.
