# Allan Lichtman Forecasts Major Democratic Gains in 2026 Midterm Elections
Political forecaster Allan Lichtman, widely known as the “American Nostradamus,” has issued a new outlook for the November 3, 2026, U.S. midterm elections, projecting substantial gains for Democrats and the possibility that the party could regain control of both chambers of Congress.
Lichtman, who correctly predicted Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election, estimates that Democrats have more than a 90% chance of winning back the House of Representatives. He has also increased his estimate of their chances of capturing the Senate from 67% to 70%.
In the Senate contest, Lichtman identified a narrow 51-49 Democratic majority as a possible outcome, while emphasizing that the result remains uncertain. He pointed to Maine, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas as potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, while expressing less certainty about Michigan.
“I have predicted a 67 per cent chance that the Democrats would take back the Senate. I think the most likely but not necessarily definitive outcome is 51-49,” Lichtman told The Daily Beast on Monday.
Lichtman also discussed the Michigan Senate race between Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers. He suggested that El-Sayed could become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, despite facing Islamophobic attacks during the campaign.
A key element of Lichtman’s outlook is President Donald Trump’s approval rating. He cited historical patterns showing that the party holding the White House tends to lose congressional seats when presidential approval is low.
“When the approval rating for a president is as low as Trump’s, on average the White House party loses 40 House and six Senate seats,” Lichtman told The Times of London. He added that the figures illustrated the political pressure facing Republicans rather than representing his specific prediction for this election.
Lichtman also highlighted the generic congressional ballot, which asks voters which party they would support without naming individual candidates. According to his assessment, Democrats held an advantage of approximately seven to 11 percentage points over Republicans in these surveys.
Voter enthusiasm was another factor in his analysis. Lichtman said Democratic supporters appeared more motivated to participate in the elections and pointed to early voting figures that, in his assessment, showed higher participation among Democrats than Republicans.
“So far, it looks pretty good for Democrats,” he said, explaining that his forecast drew on several indicators rather than opinion polls alone. These included issue surveys, presidential approval ratings, voter enthusiasm and broader political conditions.
Lichtman developed his well-known “13 Keys to the White House” forecasting system in 1981 with Russian mathematician Vladimir Keilis-Borok. The framework evaluates political and historical conditions to predict the outcomes of U.S. presidential elections.
His forecasting record, however, has faced scrutiny following the 2024 presidential election. Lichtman predicted that Democratic nominee Kamala Harris would defeat Trump, but Trump won the election. Lichtman later pointed to the unusual circumstances surrounding President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, which resulted in Harris becoming the Democratic nominee without a traditional presidential primary campaign.
He said the circumstances complicated his assessment of the system’s nomination-related key. The 2024 outcome has renewed questions about the limits of forecasting models, particularly during elections shaped by unusual political developments.
Lichtman’s latest assessment presents a favorable outlook for Democrats ahead of the midterms, but his estimates remain forecasts rather than confirmed outcomes. The final balance of power will depend on the results of individual congressional races on November 3.
