Alphabet loses nearly $500 billion in market value as AI spending and weak results rattle investors
# Alphabet Loses Nearly $500 Billion in Market Value as AI Spending Concerns Weigh on Shares

Alphabet suffered a major stock-market setback on Thursday, losing nearly $500 billion in market value after its quarterly results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The sharp decline reflected growing investor concerns about slowing advertising growth, rising artificial intelligence expenses and uncertainty over how quickly AI investments will generate returns.

Alphabet shares fell nearly 13% to close at $283.82, marking one of the largest single-day losses in corporate market value. The decline ranked second in history, behind Nvidia’s approximately $598 billion loss in market value in January 2025.

The Google parent company reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion, an increase of 25% from the same period a year earlier. However, the figure missed analysts’ forecast of $128.2 billion. Adjusted earnings also came in below expectations at $2.67 per share, compared with the projected $3.02.

Much of the market’s concern focused on Google’s advertising business, which remains Alphabet’s largest source of revenue. Search advertising revenue increased 12% year over year, slowing from the 17% growth recorded in the previous quarter. The company also acknowledged that its expanding AI-powered search features could be changing how it generates advertising income.

Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler told investors that increased adoption of AI Mode was affecting revenue from advertisements displayed alongside traditional search results. AI-generated responses generally provide fewer opportunities to display ads than conventional search pages, creating a potential challenge for Google’s established advertising model.

Schindler said Alphabet was exploring ways to introduce advertising into AI Mode, although new formats were still being developed. The company’s ability to incorporate ads into AI-powered search without undermining the user experience could become an important factor in sustaining its advertising business.

At the same time, Alphabet is investing heavily in the computing infrastructure required to compete in the rapidly expanding AI market. The company spent approximately $51.4 billion on capital expenditures during the quarter, mainly on data centers and other computing resources needed to support its AI operations.

Alphabet projected capital expenditures of between $195 billion and $205 billion for the year, more than double its spending in the previous year. The company has also indicated that investment will increase further in 2027, raising questions about the scale and duration of its spending commitments.

The investment burden has begun to affect cash generation. Alphabet recorded negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion during the quarter, marking the second consecutive quarter in which its cash outflows exceeded the cash generated after capital expenditures.

Despite the concerns, parts of Alphabet’s business continued to deliver substantial growth. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, increasing 103% from a year earlier. The Gemini app also surpassed one billion users, highlighting the expanding reach of Google’s AI products.

However, investors remain focused on whether revenue from AI services, cloud computing and other products will eventually justify the enormous costs of developing and operating the technology. The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure requires significant upfront investment, while the timing and scale of future returns remain uncertain.

The spending pressure extends across the technology industry. Major companies, including Meta, Alphabet and Amazon, are reportedly on track to spend more than $700 billion collectively this year on AI chips and infrastructure. Microsoft shares, meanwhile, rose nearly 2.9% in after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday.

Alphabet’s latest results highlight the tension between its strong growth in cloud computing and AI adoption and the financial risks associated with its aggressive investment strategy. The company’s ability to sustain advertising revenue while turning its AI infrastructure spending into profitable growth will remain central to investor confidence.
