# SpaceX Offers Employees 20% Pay Boost for Six-Week Data Center Assignments

SpaceX is offering employees a 20% pay increase for volunteering to spend six weeks working at its data center sites near Memphis, Tennessee, as the company accelerates efforts to expand its computing infrastructure, according to Business Insider.

The temporary pay premium will be added to employees’ regular salaries or hourly wages for the duration of their assignments, according to a company-wide email from early October reviewed by the publication. Volunteers will also be eligible for bonuses tied to the program’s success, while SpaceX will cover travel expenses and logistical arrangements.

“We now need leaders — current and emerging — to guide teams and remove blockers as we bring more supercomputers online,” the email stated. It added that applicants do not need to hold management positions. Although construction experience would be beneficial, the company emphasized that “drive matters most.”

SpaceX is seeking employees with strong performance records, with preference given to those who have worked at the company for more than a year. The initiative is intended to bring additional personnel to support the rapid expansion of its data center operations.

## Data center expansion drives staffing demand

Employees selected for the assignment will spend six weeks working on-site in Memphis or Southaven, Mississippi, where SpaceX is expanding its Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers. The facilities are being developed to meet rising demand for computing capacity, according to Quartz.

A separate email reviewed by Business Insider indicates that SpaceX has offered a similar 20% pay premium since at least August. That earlier message called for “SpaceX experts and aces” to support the expansion for a three-month period.

The current program is scheduled to conclude on Dec. 31, 2026, although the company could extend it. The temporary incentive reflects the growing importance of staffing as SpaceX works to bring additional computing systems online.

## Musk targets major increase in computing capacity

The staffing initiative follows SpaceX’s announcement of its third-quarter financial results, which showed revenue of $14.6 billion. Of that amount, $7.5 billion came from its Super Intelligence segment, which includes its neocloud business, the Grok chatbot and the Cursor coding tool.

Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said during the earnings call that companies had been approaching SpaceX persistently to secure access to its computing resources.

“I’ve been spending, personally, a lot of my time in Memphis, often four days a week,” Musk said, according to Business Insider.

He also outlined a goal of adding another 10 gigawatts of computing capacity by the end of 2027, underscoring the scale of the company’s planned expansion.

The push comes as demand for computing power continues to grow alongside the development of advanced artificial intelligence models and other resource-intensive digital services. SpaceX’s data center investments are intended to position the company to serve businesses seeking access to large amounts of processing capacity.

## Major computing contract adds to expansion plans

SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen disclosed in September that the company had secured a computing agreement worth $1.1 billion per month with an undisclosed customer. Payments under the agreement are scheduled to begin in December.

The contract highlights the potential commercial value of the company’s expanding computing infrastructure and provides additional context for its efforts to increase capacity. However, the customer has not been publicly identified in the information cited in the reports.

The company’s growing investment in computing also coincides with Musk’s broader plans to connect several of his business interests.

Earlier this month, Musk said he was considering combining SpaceX and Tesla into a single entity spanning rockets, satellites, internet services, chatbots, social media, robotics and electric vehicles.

On Tuesday, he said both companies had established special committees of independent directors to examine a potential merger, which he described as “a good idea.” Musk also acknowledged that his roles as a major shareholder and executive at both companies would make him a “conflicted party.”

He cautioned that there was no guarantee the companies would reach an agreement.

For now, the temporary pay increase is a direct effort to secure additional personnel for SpaceX’s data center expansion. As the company pursues its ambitious computing targets and prepares for new commercial demand, the success of the initiative will depend in part on its ability to mobilize experienced employees and bring new infrastructure online on schedule.
