# Texas Voter Registration Glitch Delays Nearly 600,000 Applications Ahead of 2026 Election

A computer programming error in Texas delayed nearly 600,000 voter registrations, raising concerns about election preparedness and prompting voting rights groups to file a lawsuit against state officials. County election officials said they had largely cleared the backlog by Wednesday, but the incident has sparked questions about the reliability of the state’s voter registration system ahead of the November 2026 election.

According to The New York Times, the lawsuit names Secretary of State Robert Howden and Freeman F. Martin, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), among the defendants. The legal action alleges that a programming error on the state’s driver’s license application website disrupted a system intended to let residents register to vote while renewing or updating their licenses.

The lawsuit argues that officials failed to maintain procedures required to process voter registrations alongside driver’s license transactions. It alleges that DPS did not forward nearly 600,000 registrations to the Secretary of State’s office for distribution to local county registrars, with some applications dating back to October 2025.

The resulting backlog has placed additional pressure on county election offices, which must process a large volume of registrations before the upcoming election. The lawsuit seeks corrective action and points to a 2021 settlement in which Texas agreed to provide residents with an online voter registration option.

Although county officials say the backlog has largely been resolved and believe there is limited risk that eligible Texans who attempted to register will be unable to vote, voting rights advocates remain concerned. They warn that confusion and uncertainty surrounding the incident could discourage some people from participating in the election.

Sen. Alex Padilla, a California Democrat and ranking member of the Senate Rules Committee, which oversees federal elections, wrote to Gov. Greg Abbott and Secretary of State Robert Howden last month seeking an explanation of the failure and its scope.

The controversy comes as Texas prepares for a closely watched U.S. Senate race in November 2026. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is set to face Democrat James Talarico, whose campaign has attracted attention as Democrats seek to challenge the state’s long-standing Republican dominance.

The registration delays also come amid broader national disputes over voting access. Voting rights advocates have raised concerns about actions they say could restrict participation, including efforts to redraw electoral maps and proposals involving federal law enforcement at polling locations.

While state officials say the immediate backlog has largely been addressed, the lawsuit and continuing questions about the system have intensified scrutiny of Texas’s election administration at a critical point in the electoral cycle.
