BlackRock shifts to US Treasuries, cuts stocks to neutral as yields climb
# BlackRock Shifts to U.S. Treasuries as Rising Yields Prompt Cut in Stock Exposure

BlackRock Investment Institute has upgraded U.S. Treasuries to overweight and downgraded U.S. equities to neutral, ending a six-year underweight position in government debt as rising yields create more attractive opportunities for investors. The portfolio adjustment reflects growing concerns about market volatility, tighter financial conditions and uncertainty surrounding the outlook for interest rates.

The revised strategy places short-term U.S. Treasuries at overweight while maintaining a neutral position in longer-term government bonds. The decision follows a sharp increase in Treasury yields, with the 10-year yield reportedly climbing above 5.3% in recent weeks to reach its highest level in 24 years. BlackRock’s move reverses an underweight stance established in October 2020, when the 10-year yield was approximately 0.9%.

Jean Boivin, head of BlackRock Investment Institute, said the 10-year Treasury yield had increased by roughly 110 basis points this year, driven primarily by higher real interest rates rather than a significant rise in inflation expectations. The shift reflects changing market assessments of borrowing costs and the returns investors can demand from government debt.

Markets have also responded to intensifying competition for capital, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices. These developments have contributed to expectations of an additional 160 basis points in Federal Reserve rate increases over the next 12 months, according to the report. BlackRock believes those expectations may be too aggressive.

“We think that is overdone,” Boivin wrote, arguing that elevated Treasury yields now provide investors with a more attractive entry point. He said investors have a cushion of approximately 75 basis points against further yield increases before 12-month total returns turn negative.

The institute sees particularly compelling opportunities in shorter-duration Treasuries, which may benefit if market expectations for aggressive monetary tightening moderate. Short-term government bonds are generally more sensitive to changes in near-term interest-rate expectations, making them an important instrument for investors managing portfolio risk.

To finance the increased allocation to Treasuries, BlackRock has closed its longstanding overweight position in U.S. equities. It has also moved U.S. agency mortgage-backed securities to neutral and reduced its underweight position in Japanese government bonds.

The institute described the adjustment as a tactical response to changing market conditions rather than a fundamental rejection of risk assets. “This is a short-term risk-management move, reflecting our belief that investors must be more dynamic in today’s volatile macro and market regime,” it said in its note.

Despite reducing its exposure to U.S. stocks, BlackRock reiterated its confidence in the long-term fundamentals of artificial intelligence. The firm continues to see opportunities in critical AI infrastructure and companies capable of generating earnings that exceed their cost of capital. It also maintained an overweight allocation to emerging-market equities.

The change in its Japanese government bond position reflects a substantial shift in yields in that market as well. BlackRock had maintained an underweight position since July 2023, when Japan’s 10-year government bond yield was approximately 0.4% to 0.5%. Yields have since risen above 3%, altering the relative attractiveness of the asset class.

BlackRock said it remains prepared to increase risk exposure again as market conditions become clearer. Its latest adjustments indicate a focus on balancing return opportunities against the potential for further volatility as investors reassess inflation, economic growth and central-bank policy.

Upcoming U.S. consumer price index and producer price index reports, which provide the first snapshots of September inflation, are expected to influence market expectations for Federal Reserve policy and Treasury yields. Any indication that inflation remains persistent could affect bond prices, while softer readings could prompt investors to reconsider the outlook for interest rates.

The portfolio shift comes as BlackRock continues to expand its investment management business. The world’s largest asset manager reported a record $15.3 trillion in client assets at the end of June 2026, up 22% from $12.5 trillion a year earlier.

BlackRock’s move highlights how sharply higher government bond yields are reshaping investment decisions. While the firm continues to see opportunities in AI and emerging markets, its latest strategy places greater emphasis on short-term Treasuries as a way to capture income while managing uncertainty over the direction of interest rates.
