# Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Enable Three-Day Workweeks as Amazon Continues Job Cuts

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes advances in artificial intelligence could eventually allow Americans to support their families while working fewer hours, potentially making a three-day workweek or a single-income household more practical. His outlook offers an optimistic perspective on how rising productivity could reshape employment and household finances.

In an interview with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, aired October 7, Bezos said AI-driven efficiency could help people maintain their standard of living while spending less time at work. He challenged predictions that artificial intelligence would inevitably trigger widespread unemployment, suggesting that higher productivity could instead contribute to labor shortages.

“Some people will also decide, you know what, I can support my family by working three days a week,” Bezos said, describing one possible consequence of economic growth driven by technological advances.

Bezos also suggested that increased productivity could reduce the need for two-income households. “You’re not going to need to have a two-earner income household,” he told Baier, while emphasizing that couples could still choose to have both partners work.

## Bezos Sees AI Reshaping the Future of Work

Bezos’ comments reflect his belief that artificial intelligence could significantly increase the amount of work accomplished with fewer resources. If productivity improvements translate into higher incomes or lower living costs, some households could gain the flexibility to reduce working hours without compromising their financial security.

He suggested that people might eventually decide to leave second jobs or spend fewer days working as technology changes the relationship between labor, income and productivity. Such a shift could also make recruitment more challenging for employers if workers become less dependent on full-time employment.

His position contrasts with concerns that AI-powered automation could eliminate jobs across multiple industries. Although businesses are increasingly adopting AI tools to improve efficiency, the ultimate impact on employment will depend on how companies deploy the technology and distribute the benefits it generates.

Bezos did not offer a timeline for when three-day workweeks might become more common. He also did not explain what economic or policy changes would be necessary to ensure that productivity gains lead to higher household incomes and shorter working hours.

## Amazon’s Workforce Reductions Add to the Debate

The remarks come as Amazon continues to restructure its workforce following substantial hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has cut approximately 30,000 corporate positions since late 2025, including another round of reductions announced in October.

Reuters reported on October 8 that Amazon had eliminated fewer than 1,000 white-collar positions in its latest round of cuts, primarily within its Stores division. Employees in the United States, India and the United Kingdom were affected.

During the interview, Bezos attributed the company’s earlier workforce reductions to its rapid expansion during the pandemic, when online shopping surged and Amazon increased its employee headcount to meet demand.

The juxtaposition of those job cuts with his optimistic outlook on AI highlights the uncertainty surrounding the technology’s economic consequences. AI may enable businesses to increase output and streamline operations, but those same efficiency gains could also lead some employers to reduce staffing requirements.

The central question is whether the resulting benefits will translate into better compensation, reduced working hours and greater flexibility for employees, or primarily into lower operating costs for businesses.

## Productivity Gains Do Not Guarantee Shorter Workweeks

Bezos’ vision depends on productivity improvements reaching workers and households in meaningful ways. Higher output does not automatically mean higher wages, fewer working days or more affordable living expenses. Those outcomes will depend on business decisions, labor market conditions and how the economic gains are distributed.

The impact is also likely to differ across industries and occupations. Some workers may benefit from AI tools that automate repetitive tasks, while others could face changes to their roles or increased pressure to meet productivity targets.

For Amazon employees, Bezos’ comments should not be interpreted as an announcement of new working arrangements. He did not say the company would introduce a three-day workweek or guarantee that employees could support their families on a single income.

Instead, his remarks present a possible long-term scenario in which AI-driven productivity changes how people earn a living and organize their time. Whether that future materializes will depend on how quickly the technology advances and whether workers share in the economic benefits it creates.
