# 81-Year-Old Texas Man Delivers Lost Luggage to Help Pay for Wife’s Cancer Care

At 81, Donald Johnson could have been spending his days enjoying a quiet retirement with his wife, children and grandchildren. Instead, he continues to spend long hours on the road delivering lost and delayed luggage to help cover his wife’s cancer-related expenses.

Johnson, a Texas resident who works as an independent contractor in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, has been doing luggage delivery work for about three years. His job involves collecting bags that have been misplaced or delayed during air travel and transporting them to their owners.

The work can be physically demanding. Johnson has sometimes worked shifts lasting as long as 14 hours as he tries to meet household expenses and help pay for his wife Josephine’s medical care.

His vehicle has accumulated more than 200,000 miles, and his delivery routes have taken him beyond the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including trips to Oklahoma.

Johnson said he took the job after finding it difficult to secure other employment opportunities. He and Josephine have been married for 57 years, and their financial challenges grew as medical bills, medication costs and other expenses accumulated during her cancer treatment.

Although the couple has insurance, Johnson said it has not been sufficient to cover all of their expenses.

Their circumstances drew wider public attention after Erin Howell encountered Johnson delivering a heavy piece of luggage to her home. Howell saw him struggling with the bag and went outside to help.

After speaking with Johnson and learning more about his situation, Howell decided to launch a GoFundMe campaign to support the couple. She later created a social media page called “Help Don Retire,” encouraging others to contribute.

In the fundraiser, Howell described seeing Johnson through her doorbell camera carrying her heavy luggage up a steep flight of stairs.

She said the 81-year-old appeared exhausted and was moving slowly under the weight of the bag.

Howell said Johnson should have been able to spend his time resting and being with his wife rather than working long hours carrying luggage to help pay for her care.

The campaign quickly attracted attention and donations from people who wanted to help the couple.

The fundraiser has now collected more than $270,000, according to the campaign information. Johnson said he was surprised by the response and expressed gratitude to those who contributed.

The financial support has also given him an opportunity to reduce the number of hours he spends working and devote more time to Josephine.

For the couple, the experience has also brought renewed attention to the commitment they made when they married nearly six decades ago.

Josephine said her husband’s actions reflected the promise they made to remain together “for better or for worse.”

Johnson’s work has recently become more difficult because his car has developed mechanical problems, forcing him to reduce his usual delivery hours.

Despite the challenges, his motivation remains centered on his wife and her recovery.

“I love her dearly, and I want her to be well,” Johnson said.

The support from strangers has given the couple some financial breathing room after years of balancing medical costs and daily expenses, while allowing Johnson to spend more time with the woman he has shared his life with for 57 years.
