Data center noise triggers sleepless nights for Memphis-area residents
**Residents Near Southaven Facility Struggle With Round-the-Clock Industrial Noise**

Families living near a regional facility in Southaven are raising concerns over persistent mechanical noise that they say has made it increasingly difficult to sleep and enjoy normal evenings at home.

Residents describe the sound as a continuous mechanical roar that can be heard throughout the day and night, creating an ongoing disturbance for neighborhoods located close to the facility.

CBS journalist Laurenn Fich recently examined the issue by speaking with residents and visiting the area surrounding the power plant to document the noise affecting nearby communities.

In footage shared by CBS News on X, Fich spoke with Jason, a resident who lives less than a mile from the facility.

Jason said residents have been dealing with the noise continuously for roughly a year.

According to him, the disturbance occurs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has remained difficult to adjust to despite the passage of time.

He described the impact on his household, particularly at night when residents are trying to sleep.

Jason said the noise can be physically noticeable, describing a sensation that can be felt in his chest.

The reported noise levels have also raised questions about nighttime exposure for residents living close to the facility.

The World Health Organization recommends that average nighttime environmental noise levels be kept below 40 decibels to reduce potential impacts on sleep and health.

However, sound measurements taken in the neighborhood reportedly exceeded 60 decibels at around 10 p.m.

The measurements have added to concerns among residents who say the noise remains prominent even during late-night hours.

Project representatives have said that significant amounts of money are being invested in measures intended to reduce the disturbance.

Those measures reportedly include sound walls and silencers designed to limit the amount of noise reaching surrounding neighborhoods.

Residents, however, say the mitigation efforts have so far provided limited improvement.

They point to a sound wall already installed at the site but argue that it has done little to reduce the constant hum reaching nearby homes.

The disagreement highlights the challenge of managing large industrial and technology-related infrastructure near established residential communities.

While project representatives have emphasized investments in noise-control measures, residents continue to describe the disruption as a daily quality-of-life issue.

Some homeowners are now looking for additional ways to raise their concerns and seek further action over the persistent noise.

The issue also reflects a broader challenge facing communities located near large-scale infrastructure projects that require substantial power and industrial equipment.

As demand for computing capacity and technology infrastructure increases, facilities supporting the industry can bring significant changes to surrounding neighborhoods.

For residents closest to the Southaven facility, however, the debate is less about the broader technology industry and more about the immediate impact on their homes.

The continuing mechanical sound has become part of daily life for families who say they simply want to regain the quiet they previously experienced.

CBS also reportedly contacted SpaceXAI for comment regarding the situation but had not received a response at the time of its report.

The ongoing dispute demonstrates the tension that can emerge when major infrastructure projects operate alongside residential communities.

For the affected homeowners, the central concern remains whether additional noise-control measures can significantly reduce the disturbance and restore nighttime quiet.
