**OpenAI Reportedly Buys Smartphone Camera Startup Glass Imaging for $300 Million**

OpenAI has reportedly acquired smartphone camera technology startup Glass Imaging for about $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal, as the ChatGPT maker continues expanding its ambitions into consumer hardware.

Founded in 2019, Glass Imaging is based in Los Altos, California, and had previously raised approximately $30 million from investors.

The company was founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who brought significant experience in computational photography to the startup.

According to TechCrunch, the two engineers previously worked on Apple’s team behind Portrait Mode, which uses software and computational techniques to enhance smartphone photography.

At Glass Imaging, Attar and Bishop focused on using artificial intelligence to address the physical limitations of smartphone cameras.

Instead of applying AI mainly after a picture has been taken, the company developed neural networks designed to understand individual camera systems and improve images at the moment of capture.

The technology is intended to produce sharper and more detailed photographs while working within the size and hardware limitations of smartphone cameras.

Glass Imaging has sought to deliver smartphone photography that can approach the image quality traditionally associated with DSLR cameras.

Its zoom-imaging technology has already been incorporated into smartphones from Chinese manufacturer Honor.

The reported acquisition could provide OpenAI with specialized expertise as the company moves deeper into hardware development.

OpenAI has not publicly explained what it plans to do with Glass Imaging or how the startup’s technology could be incorporated into future products.

TechCrunch reported that OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment regarding the acquisition.

The deal comes amid reports that OpenAI is developing a range of consumer hardware products, potentially including smartphones, earbuds and AI-powered companion devices.

The company is also working with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on new hardware initiatives.

Ive joined OpenAI’s broader hardware efforts following its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products in 2025.

The former Apple designer, who played a major role in the design of the iPhone, is involved in developing new devices and shaping how consumers interact with AI technology.

Glass Imaging could therefore become part of OpenAI’s wider effort to create hardware specifically designed around its artificial intelligence systems.

The reported purchase is also part of a broader acquisition strategy at OpenAI, which has recently added other technology companies to its portfolio.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the company recently acquired internet talk-show company TBPN and an open-source developer tools startup.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is preparing for a possible initial public offering that has reportedly been targeted for next year.

The company’s expansion comes as it continues developing increasingly powerful AI models, including its recently launched GPT-6 Astra.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman described Astra as a major technological advance and said it could eventually be viewed as a starting point for the AGI era.

At the same time, CEO Sam Altman has warned about the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful artificial intelligence.

Altman has said that without appropriate safeguards, humanity could eventually face challenges in maintaining control over advanced AI systems.

His comments followed similar concerns raised by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, adding to the growing debate over AI development, safety and the pace of technological progress.

The reported Glass Imaging acquisition signals that OpenAI’s ambitions may extend well beyond AI software, with cameras and other specialized hardware potentially playing a role in its future consumer products.
