# American Airlines Flight Diverted After Passenger Allegedly Turns Violent Midair

An American Airlines flight traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted to Baltimore after a passenger allegedly became violent during the flight, forcing fellow travelers and crew members to intervene and restrain him.

**American Airlines Flight 618** was en route to Newark, New Jersey, on September 3 when the disturbance reportedly began approximately two hours after takeoff.

According to reports, the unidentified passenger began shouting at a male traveler seated nearby. What initially appeared to be a verbal confrontation reportedly escalated rapidly into a physical altercation.

Witnesses said the passenger was yelling about Jesus and going to hell before a flight attendant approached him in an attempt to calm the situation.

The passenger allegedly responded with a racial slur directed at the Black flight attendant and made anti-gay comments during the confrontation.

The situation then reportedly became physical when the man allegedly struck the passenger sitting next to him.

A female passenger attempted to intervene but was reportedly pushed by the man as the confrontation continued.

Three other male passengers subsequently stepped in to help control the situation and prevent the alleged assault from escalating further.

Among those who intervened was **Juan Mejia**, a retired law enforcement officer who was traveling on the flight.

Mejia later described the sudden change in the cabin atmosphere, saying the situation went from being quiet to becoming chaotic within moments.

He recalled turning around and seeing the passenger allegedly holding the other man around the neck and attacking him.

As the struggle continued, flight attendants reportedly provided duct tape and zip ties to the passengers who were attempting to restrain the man.

The three men then used the materials to secure the passenger to his seat until authorities could take control of the situation.

Images and video reportedly taken during the incident showed the passenger restrained in his seat while crew members and other travelers worked to maintain control of the situation.

The restraints reportedly included duct tape and zip ties, with photographs appearing to show tape placed around the passenger’s head and other parts of his body.

The disturbance ultimately forced the aircraft to divert from its planned route.

Instead of continuing directly to Newark, Flight 618 landed at **Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport** late Thursday night.

American Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the flight had been diverted because of the onboard incident.

American Airlines described the individual involved as a **“disruptive customer”** and said law enforcement officers were waiting for the aircraft when it arrived in Baltimore.

Authorities then removed the passenger from the aircraft, allowing the flight to continue its journey to Newark.

In a statement, American Airlines emphasized that the safety and security of passengers and employees remained its highest priority.

The airline also said it does not tolerate violence and thanked its crew members for their professionalism during the incident.

The carrier additionally expressed appreciation to passengers for their patience and understanding as the flight dealt with the unexpected disruption.

The **FBI** became involved following the incident, while Maryland Transportation Police arrested and booked the passenger on state charges.

Investigators were reportedly conducting interviews and were expected to consult with federal prosecutors to determine whether additional federal charges could be pursued.

The identity of the passenger and the specific state charges had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the reports.

The incident highlights the serious challenges airline crews can face when an onboard disturbance unexpectedly escalates.

Unlike incidents on the ground, airline personnel must manage potentially dangerous situations inside a confined aircraft while the plane is thousands of feet above the ground.

Flight attendants are trained to respond to disruptive behavior, but a violent confrontation can require assistance from other passengers when immediate physical intervention becomes necessary.

In this case, several travelers reportedly stepped forward to help restrain the passenger until the aircraft could land and law enforcement could take over.

The diversion also demonstrates how a single passenger disturbance can affect an entire aircraft, potentially disrupting travel plans for hundreds of other passengers.

Although the flight eventually continued to Newark, passengers were forced to deal with an unexpected stop in Baltimore because of the alleged behavior.

The case is now being handled by law enforcement, with investigators determining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and whether further charges are appropriate.

For the airline industry, incidents such as this remain a reminder of the importance of maintaining order and safety during flights.

What began as an alleged verbal outburst reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation involving multiple passengers, resulting in restraints, an emergency diversion and an arrest.

The incident ultimately ended after the aircraft landed safely in Baltimore and authorities took custody of the passenger, allowing the remaining travelers to continue their journey to Newark.
