Southwest to debut airport lounges at 4 US airports, plans 7 more
# Southwest Airlines to Launch Airport Lounges as It Moves Further Into Premium Travel

Southwest Airlines is preparing to enter the airport lounge market, announcing plans to introduce a new lounge network at four major U.S. airports as the carrier looks to offer customers a more premium travel experience.

The airline announced the initiative September 2 and said it will partner with Chase, drawing on the financial company’s experience operating its Sapphire Reserve Lounge network.

The first Southwest lounges are planned for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and Nashville International Airport in Tennessee.

Southwest also plans to open at least seven additional lounges across its airport network over the next several years.

The new facilities are expected to feature upgraded amenities, modern designs and dining options inspired by the local destinations where the lounges are located.

Customers will also have access to travel benefits associated with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge experience.

The lounge expansion represents a significant change for Southwest, a carrier that has traditionally positioned itself around value, simplicity and a distinctive customer experience rather than premium airport services.

Tony Roach, Southwest’s Executive Vice President and Chief Customer & Brand Officer, said the lounges will extend the airline’s hospitality into the airport environment.

The company views the lounge network as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its Rapid Rewards loyalty program and deepen its long-standing relationship with Chase.

Southwest plans to introduce a new premium Rapid Rewards credit card next year that will provide access to the lounges.

The airline has not yet announced the card’s annual fee or released full details about its benefits.

The lounge announcement comes as Southwest continues to reshape several elements of its business model.

The airline faced significant pressure in 2024 after activist investor Elliott Investment Management acquired a stake worth approximately $1.9 billion and pushed for changes aimed at improving the company’s performance.

Southwest subsequently began moving away from some of the policies and practices that had long distinguished its brand.

In 2024, the airline announced that it would end its decades-old open-seating system, replacing a policy that had been a defining feature of Southwest’s customer experience.

The following year, the carrier also ended its long-standing free checked-bag policy.

Southwest had promoted the benefit for decades through its well-known “Bags Fly Free” campaign.

The airline now charges for the first and second checked bags in many circumstances, marking another major departure from its traditional approach.

CEO Bob Jordan has said the changes are intended to help Southwest attract new customer segments and improve profitability while responding to changing travel expectations.

The new lounge strategy fits into that broader transformation.

By adding premium airport spaces, an upgraded credit-card product and expanded loyalty benefits, Southwest is seeking to compete for travelers who may place greater importance on comfort and exclusive airport services.

The partnership with Chase could also help Southwest leverage an established model for premium lounges rather than building the entire experience independently.

The initial locations in Texas, Maryland, Hawaii and Tennessee will give the airline a presence in several important markets while providing a foundation for future expansion.

Southwest’s decision to invest in lounges highlights how dramatically the airline’s strategy is evolving.

Once best known for open seating and free checked bags, the carrier is increasingly adding premium features as it seeks to broaden its customer base and strengthen its financial performance.
