Nvidia invests $3.5 billion in MediaTek as AI chip partnership expands
Nvidia is deepening its influence across the artificial intelligence industry with a $3.5 billion investment in Taiwan-based chipmaker MediaTek, strengthening a partnership designed to expand Nvidia’s technology beyond traditional data-center hardware.

The investment forms part of MediaTek’s record $3.9 billion overseas convertible bond offering, which also attracted participation from Alphabet, although the amount invested by Alphabet was not disclosed.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the transaction should not be viewed as circular financing because Nvidia and MediaTek remain independent businesses with their own operations and customers.

The partnership will allow MediaTek customers to use Nvidia technology when developing customized artificial intelligence chips that can connect directly to Nvidia’s larger computing platforms.

At the center of the arrangement is Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology, which provides chip designers with ready-made high-speed connections and specialized memory technology.

The system is intended to make it easier for companies to integrate their own custom AI processors into Nvidia-powered data-center infrastructure.

Instead of developing complex interconnect technology from the ground up, chipmakers can concentrate their engineering resources on creating specialized processors for their individual workloads.

The strategy could help Nvidia strengthen its position as the broader AI industry moves toward increasingly customized computing architectures.

Joe Tigay, portfolio manager of the Rational Equity Armor Fund, described the investment as a way for Nvidia to accelerate growth throughout its technology ecosystem.

He noted that while the transaction is different from directly financing a customer, Nvidia is still using its financial resources to encourage the development of products that expand the reach of its architecture.

Huang said artificial intelligence is transforming computing across data centers, personal computers, automobiles and other technology platforms.

He praised MediaTek’s expertise in system-on-chip design, connectivity, performance and energy efficiency, saying the partnership could help bring Nvidia-powered computing into new markets.

MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai similarly described the investment as a reinforcement of the companies’ long-running relationship.

The two companies are targeting opportunities spanning cloud infrastructure, edge computing, personal devices and automotive systems.

Their cooperation is also extending into the emerging field of physical AI, where intelligent software is increasingly integrated into vehicles and other machines operating in the physical world.

Nvidia and MediaTek are expected to continue collaborating on processors for personal computers and AI technologies for vehicles.

The latest deal builds on an existing relationship rather than creating an entirely new partnership.

In June, the companies worked together on the RTX Spark PC chip, aimed at bringing advanced AI capabilities directly to laptops and desktop computers.

The investment gives Nvidia another route to expand its technology ecosystem while MediaTek gains financial backing and closer access to Nvidia’s AI architecture.

For MediaTek, the partnership could create new opportunities in customized silicon as demand grows for specialized AI processors.

For Nvidia, encouraging other chipmakers to build products compatible with its technology could make its architecture more deeply embedded across the AI computing industry.

The move also comes as competition intensifies among semiconductor companies seeking to capture the rapidly expanding AI hardware market.

Rather than relying exclusively on selling its own processors, Nvidia is increasingly building an ecosystem in which outside companies can develop complementary and customized technologies around its platforms.

The MediaTek investment therefore represents more than a financial transaction; it is another step in Nvidia’s strategy to make its AI computing architecture a foundation for a wider range of devices and applications.
