# Teen Withdraws Social Media Lawsuit Ahead of Bellwether Trial

A 15-year-old girl from New Jersey has voluntarily withdrawn her lawsuit against Meta, Google and Snap just weeks before the case was scheduled to go to trial in October. The case was one of three bellwether lawsuits selected from roughly 3,300 consolidated cases involving allegations that major social media companies deliberately designed their platforms to keep young users engaged and potentially contribute to mental health problems. The other two bellwether cases involving teenage plaintiffs remain scheduled for trial.

The girl, identified in court documents as P.M-Y, alleged that features such as personalized recommendations, endless scrolling and notifications were designed in ways that encouraged excessive use among young people. Her lawsuit also linked the alleged platform practices to a broader mental health crisis involving teenagers, including claims related to self-harm.

Her attorney, Emizly Jeffcott, said the teenager originally brought the case in an effort to hold social media companies accountable and encourage changes aimed at protecting young users. However, court filings show that she ultimately chose to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit without proceeding to trial. Her attorney said the teenager wanted to move forward with her life, while the companies said no payment was made in connection with the dismissal.

Meta has continued to reject the allegations and argued that the girl's mental health difficulties existed before she began using social media. The company said this circumstance reflects a broader pattern it believes may apply to many of the lawsuits filed against it. YouTube also pointed to its long-standing position that it provides age-appropriate experiences and parental controls for young users and families.

The withdrawal comes as Meta faces thousands of similar lawsuits filed by families, school districts and other plaintiffs. The cases have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation in California, allowing common legal issues and evidence to be handled together while individual cases move forward.

The bellwether trials are particularly important because their outcomes could influence future negotiations and provide an indication of how juries may respond to similar claims. However, the results of these early cases would not automatically determine the outcome of every lawsuit in the wider litigation.

The broader legal battle has already produced significant developments. In March, an individual trial resulted in verdicts of $4.2 million against Meta and $1.8 million against Google. Another teenage plaintiff later withdrew a case against Meta in July after other defendants reached settlements.

Meta is also fighting a separate case brought by attorneys general from 29 states, who accuse the company of designing its platforms in ways that can encourage young users to become excessively engaged while allegedly violating other laws. The company is contesting those allegations in court.

The latest withdrawal therefore does not end the wider legal challenge facing social media companies. Instead, attention is now turning to the remaining bellwether cases and the continuing trials that could shape how thousands of similar claims are handled in the future.
