# Amazon Plans Massive Drone Delivery Expansion to Nearly 500 U.S. Communities

Amazon is taking a major step toward making drone delivery a mainstream part of online shopping, announcing plans to expand its Prime Air service to nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026. The planned expansion would increase Amazon’s current drone delivery footprint by roughly six times and bring the service to tens of millions of additional customers.

Prime Air currently operates from 11 sites covering 10 U.S. metropolitan areas, including Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Waco. Amazon is preparing to launch the service in several more markets, including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta and Boise, before expanding into additional communities later this year.

The company says hundreds of thousands of packages have already been delivered by drone in 2026. Prime Air is designed to transport eligible orders directly from local facilities to customers without relying on traditional delivery vehicles for the final leg of the journey.

Amazon says millions of products can qualify for drone delivery, ranging from groceries and electronics to cosmetics, medications and household essentials. Most eligible items must weigh five pounds or less and fit inside a large shoebox.

In areas where the service is available, customers can select drone delivery during checkout and identify an appropriate delivery location. Amazon says some orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, although the typical delivery currently takes around an hour.

The company is also using pricing incentives to encourage adoption. Prime members receive free drone delivery on eligible orders of $50 or more, while smaller qualifying orders cost $2.99 for Prime members. Non-Prime customers pay $4.99 for eligible drone deliveries.

Amazon’s latest announcement represents a significant milestone for a project that dates back more than a decade. Jeff Bezos first unveiled the Prime Air concept in 2013, promising that autonomous drones could eventually deliver packages to customers within minutes.

Turning that vision into a large-scale commercial service, however, has required Amazon to overcome significant regulatory and technological hurdles. The company’s latest MK30 drones use cameras, sensors and a Detect-and-Avoid system to identify obstacles and navigate safely during flights. Prime Air operates under an FAA Part 135 air carrier certificate.

Amazon is also facing growing competition in the drone delivery market. Walmart and Alphabet’s Wing are expanding their own drone networks, increasing pressure on Amazon to prove that autonomous delivery can operate safely, reliably and economically at scale.

If successful, Amazon’s expansion could transform the last-mile delivery industry by allowing small packages to travel directly from local facilities to customers without a traditional delivery vehicle. However, concerns surrounding weather, noise, privacy, safety, operating costs and airspace regulations could still determine how quickly drone delivery becomes a normal part of everyday commerce.
