# Etched Surges to $21 Billion Valuation After Raising $700 Million in Fresh Funding
AI chip startup Etched has secured another $700 million in funding, sending its valuation soaring to $21 billion as investors place a major bet on the company’s technology for accelerating artificial intelligence workloads. The latest funding round was led by Jane Street and included major venture capital firms such as Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global.
The new investment represents a dramatic rise in Etched’s valuation in a remarkably short period. The company was reportedly valued at around $5 billion in December before reaching $10.3 billion through a $300 million Series C round in July. Just weeks later, its valuation has more than doubled to $21 billion.
Etched is developing specialized AI computing systems designed specifically for inference, the stage of AI processing that takes place after a user submits a prompt and the system generates a response. Rather than simply selling individual chips, the startup provides complete systems known as “frontier inference clusters.”
The company says its technology is designed around the two major stages of inference: prefill and decode. During prefill, an AI system processes and understands the user’s prompt and its surrounding context. The decode stage then generates the individual tokens that form the final response.
Etched has developed a new prefill chip designed to operate at lower voltage, allowing the company to fit more transistors onto the chip while managing heat more efficiently. According to the company, this approach can help process large amounts of information more quickly.
For the decode stage, Etched has developed a new memory architecture and interconnect technology called cluster-scale memory. The system allows multiple chips to access a shared pool of memory at high speeds and with low latency, potentially improving the performance of large AI models.
The startup was founded by Harvard dropouts Gavin Uberti, Chris Zhu and Robert Wachen. In only a few months, the company has progressed from an early concept to working silicon, an integrated computing system and significant customer demand, including reported orders worth more than $1 billion.
Jane Street, which led the latest funding round, said it had tested Etched’s technology and was impressed by its early performance. The financial firm has also deployed an Etched system in its own data center to support demanding workloads.
