Starlink expands in-flight Wi-Fi to 48 airlines

SpaceX’s Starlink is rapidly expanding its presence in commercial aviation, with 48 airlines now announcing partnerships or plans to introduce the satellite company’s high-speed internet service to passengers. The expansion could significantly change the in-flight Wi-Fi experience by giving travelers faster and more reliable connectivity, including on long-haul routes where traditional systems have often struggled. Starlink uses a low-Earth-orbit satellite network designed to provide high-speed, low-latency internet to aircraft, allowing passengers to browse websites, stream videos, make video calls and use other data-heavy services while flying.
Major airlines adopting or preparing to introduce Starlink include United Airlines, Air France, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines and WestJet. United Airlines is among the largest adopters and says Starlink-equipped aircraft can deliver internet speeds of up to 250 Mbps while supporting multiple connected devices. The airline expects Starlink to be available on around three out of every four departures by the end of 2026, with its two-cabin fleet targeted for full installation by the end of 2027.
The technology could allow passengers to perform activities that were previously difficult during flights, including high-quality video streaming, online gaming and video conferencing. Some airlines are also offering Starlink connectivity without additional charges, potentially making high-speed Wi-Fi an increasingly standard part of the passenger experience. United has positioned the service as complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers, while Qatar Airways provides free Starlink connectivity on equipped flights through its passenger loyalty offering.
However, travelers should not assume that every flight operated by a participating airline will provide Starlink. Service availability depends on whether the specific aircraft has been equipped with the required hardware and whether regulatory approvals have been completed in the relevant market. American Airlines, for example, announced plans to begin installing Starlink on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft from the first quarter of 2027. The airline said the system will support activities including streaming, web browsing and real-time communications.
The rapid growth of Starlink is also increasing competitive pressure on airlines to improve their onboard connectivity as they seek to attract passengers, particularly business and premium travelers. Airlines are increasingly viewing reliable high-speed internet as an important part of the overall travel experience rather than simply an optional feature. For passengers, the expansion could eventually make slow and unreliable aircraft Wi-Fi less common across the industry.
However, the transition will not happen immediately because airlines must install equipment on individual aircraft, secure regulatory approvals and integrate Starlink with existing onboard systems. As more carriers complete installations, travelers will increasingly be able to determine whether their specific flight offers Starlink before boarding.
