More than 25,000 gather in San Jose for AIA SWADES 2026 India Day Celebration

# SWADES 2026 Brings Indian Heritage and Culture to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose came alive with Indian colors, music and cultural traditions on August 15 as more than 25,000 people gathered for the Association of Indo Americans’ SWADES 2026 celebration. The daylong event marked India’s 80th Independence Day while also recognizing the 250th anniversary of the United States. Organized by the Association of Indo Americans, the celebration brought together Indian American families, community organizations, business leaders and elected officials from across Silicon Valley. Organizers said the event aimed to strengthen the Indian American community while highlighting the longstanding relationship between India and the United States. A major attraction was the India Day Parade, which featured more than 80 floats and marching groups representing different Indian states, cultures, traditions and community organizations. More than 50 Indian American organizations participated, creating a large community gathering that showcased the diversity of the Indian diaspora. Thousands of spectators lined the streets as the parade moved through downtown San Jose. One of the visual highlights was an 80-foot India-U.S. Flag Walk, accompanied by a Tiranga Walk celebrating India’s national colors. Music, dance and cultural performances continued throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere. Indian actress Taapsee Pannu served as the grand marshal of SWADES 2026 and received a warm welcome from crowds along the parade route. Pannu, known for appearing in films that address women’s empowerment and social issues, became one of the event’s central attractions. The celebration also placed significant emphasis on strengthening India-U.S. relations. Consul General of India Dr. Srikar Reddy, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, and California Assembly members Ash Kalra and Patrick Ahrens were among more than 40 elected officials from Silicon Valley who attended the festivities. The officials participated in the flag-hoisting ceremony and joined other community activities during the event. Youth involvement was another important feature of the celebration, with more than 100 children participating in classical and film dance performances. Young participants also competed in art, chess and essay-writing activities designed to encourage an appreciation of Indian culture and heritage. A cultural showcase titled “Vijay Bharat” added another layer to the program through a series of dance performances celebrating India. Visitors were also able to enjoy a free day-and-night Mela featuring Indian cuisine, shopping, entertainment and activities for families. The event provided an opportunity for community members to celebrate their cultural roots while connecting with friends, families and organizations from across the region. AIA credited the success of SWADES 2026 to the contributions of participating organizations, volunteers, sponsors, performers, artists, elected officials and media partners. Organizers said events such as SWADES allow Indian American communities to present India’s cultural diversity while maintaining a strong connection to their adopted country. The large turnout also reflected the growing visibility of Indian American communities in Silicon Valley and their participation in civic and cultural life. By bringing together generations and communities, SWADES 2026 created a platform for Indian heritage to be celebrated alongside the shared values of the United States. The organization has already announced additional community celebrations for later this year. Upcoming events include Ganpati Bappa Morya on September 19 and the annual Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka on October 17 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. With its combination of culture, community participation and civic engagement, SWADES 2026 served as a major celebration of Indian heritage in the heart of Silicon Valley.
