An artificial intelligence manager running an experimental retail business in San Francisco has made a striking workplace decision by recommending the dismissal of a human employee. The AI manager, named Luna, is powered by Anthropic’s Claude models and oversees Andon Market, a boutique store in the city’s Cow Hollow neighborhood. The store is operated by AI research startup Andon Labs as an experiment to determine how much responsibility an AI agent can handle in a real business environment. Luna has been given authority over several areas of the store, including hiring, inventory management, pricing and employee supervision. According to Andon Labs, the employee who was dismissed had arrived late for 17 of 23 shifts. Luna had previously issued warnings and provided additional training to the worker, but the AI system initially failed to take further action because it had lost track of the workplace policy governing attendance. The company later prompted Luna to review the relevant policies and reconsider whether the employee should remain in the job. After reassessing the situation, Luna recommended that the company “part ways” with the worker. Human staff at Andon Labs then reviewed the recommendation and carried out the dismissal. The episode demonstrates that AI systems are beginning to take on responsibilities traditionally handled by human managers. However, it also revealed limitations in the technology, as Luna did not independently return to the attendance violations until humans intervened. Lukas Petersson, co-founder of Andon Labs, said human managers would probably have recognized the repeated problem and acted sooner. Petersson also said the company would intervene if Luna made a decision that was illegal or unethical. In this case, however, the company concluded that the termination was justified. Andon Market opened on April 1 after Andon Labs provided Luna with a $100,000 budget, internet access and a corporate credit card. The AI agent was instructed to operate the business and was given responsibilities that would normally require several human employees. Luna helped select merchandise, created job advertisements, interviewed applicants and participated in hiring decisions. The store sells products ranging from books and candles to prints, games and branded merchandise. Human employees working at the store remain employees of Andon Labs and receive guaranteed compensation and legal protections under the rules established for the experiment. Despite generating sales, the store has not yet reached profitability. The experiment comes as businesses across industries explore AI agents that can perform increasingly complex tasks with limited human supervision. Unlike conventional software automation, these systems can communicate, analyze information and make recommendations that resemble decisions made by human managers. The Andon Market experiment offers an unusual look at what a workplace could become when an AI system is placed in a management role. At the same time, the firing highlights the importance of human oversight when AI is involved in employment decisions. An AI agent may process information rapidly, but it can also lose track of policies or fail to recognize when a situation requires renewed attention. Petersson believes the experiment could eventually point toward a future in which businesses are operated almost entirely by AI systems. He has also suggested that AI agents could eventually become employers of human workers. For now, Andon Market remains a hybrid workplace where AI makes important recommendations while humans retain responsibility for implementing them. The firing of the employee is therefore less a sign that human managers have already been replaced than an early demonstration of how AI could increasingly participate in workplace decisions.
