### Washington Freedom Moves Closer to Permanent 10,000-Seat Cricket Stadium in Maryland

Major League Cricket powerhouse Washington Freedom is moving closer to securing a permanent home in the Washington metropolitan area after the Frederick City Council approved rezoning for a proposed 10,000-seat cricket stadium. The council voted 5-1 to rezone approximately 24 acres of the Gateway Property on Frederick’s eastern edge between Route 144 and Interstate 70. The site currently operates as a golf driving range and is expected to become the future home of the Washington Freedom. The franchise is owned by Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, founder of Maryland-based technology company Infinite Computer Solutions. Govil described the rezoning decision as a major step toward building a stronger connection between the team and the local community. The proposed stadium would give Washington Freedom a permanent venue after the franchise previously played its matches at facilities in other locations. Govil said having a local stadium would make it easier to build long-term support among fans and residents in the region. Several regulatory and approval processes remain before construction can begin, but the franchise hopes to move forward as quickly as possible. Govil has expressed a desire for the team to potentially play at the new facility in 2027 and participate in the momentum surrounding cricket’s return to the Olympics in 2028. Cricket will return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles in 2028 for the first time since 1900. The proposed development is intended to serve a much broader purpose than hosting professional cricket matches. Plans call for a cricket park and multi-use community space that could remain accessible throughout the year. The facility could host youth sports, recreational programs, community events, concerts, festivals, artisan markets and graduation ceremonies outside the professional cricket season. City officials estimate the stadium could attract approximately 100,000 visitors annually and generate nearly $2 million in tax revenue each year. If completed, the venue would likely become only the second full-fledged purpose-built cricket stadium on the East Coast after Broward County Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Govil also highlighted the project’s private ownership structure as a distinguishing feature, saying the stadium would be developed on privately owned land. The proposed venue could provide Maryland’s growing cricket community with professional-level infrastructure for both elite competition and grassroots development. The Washington metropolitan area has one of the largest amateur cricket communities in the United States, with numerous leagues, hundreds of teams and thousands of players. Despite that popularity, the region has never had a permanent professional cricket stadium. Local cricket players and community leaders have welcomed the project as an important milestone for the sport. Supporters believe the facility could give young athletes greater access to training opportunities while creating a central gathering place for families and fans. Maryland Youth Cricket Association board member Falgun Patel described the approval as the realization of a long-standing dream for players, volunteers and cricket supporters. The stadium could also strengthen Washington’s position as one of the leading cricket markets in the United States, particularly among the region’s large South Asian and Caribbean communities. Washington Freedom has already established itself as one of Major League Cricket’s most successful franchises. The team won its first MLC championship in 2024 after defeating the San Francisco Unicorns by 96 runs in the final. The Freedom returned to the championship match in 2025 but lost to MI New York by five runs. In 2026, the franchise reached the final for a third consecutive season before losing to the Los Angeles Knight Riders by one run. The three straight championship appearances have helped make Washington Freedom one of the league’s most prominent teams. Govil attributed the franchise’s success to its culture, coaching staff, team performance and strong fan support. He also noted that the competitive nature of MLC means small moments and injuries can determine the outcome of matches. The Frederick stadium project comes as Major League Cricket continues moving toward dedicated home venues across the United States. The league initially relied heavily on shared and temporary facilities during its early seasons. Other franchises have begun developing more permanent homes, including the Los Angeles Knight Riders’ purpose-built cricket ground in Pomona and the Texas Super Kings’ use of Grand Prairie Stadium. A permanent Washington Freedom stadium would further expand the league’s infrastructure while giving the franchise a stronger identity in the Washington market. For local players, families and cricket fans, the proposed facility could represent more than a professional sports venue. It could become a year-round center for cricket development, community events and youth participation. With rezoning now approved, the project has cleared an important early hurdle, although additional regulatory steps remain before construction can begin. If those approvals move forward, Washington Freedom could soon have a permanent home capable of supporting both professional cricket and the rapidly expanding grassroots game in the Washington region.
