### SpaceX and Northrop Grumman Complete Initial Tests for Golden Dome Missile Defense Program

SpaceX, Northrop Grumman and other companies developing space-based interceptors for President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense initiative have completed an initial round of key tests. The milestone represents an early step in the development of an ambitious U.S. defense architecture designed to counter increasingly advanced missile threats. U.S. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein, who leads the Golden Dome program, said participating companies had completed their first major tests and would now move toward demonstrating that their technologies can operate in the space environment. The initial testing included demonstrations involving the transmission of data from sensors to interceptor systems and evaluations of spacecraft propulsion technologies. These tests are intended to establish whether the technologies can perform the basic functions required for a future space-based missile defense network. Companies will eventually have to demonstrate their systems in orbit as the program progresses toward more advanced testing. SpaceX and Northrop Grumman are among the companies developing the Space-Based Interceptor component of Golden Dome. The proposed system is intended to form part of a layered missile defense architecture capable of responding to ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missile threats. The U.S. Space Force created the Space-Based Interceptor program to develop a large constellation of interceptors in low Earth orbit. These systems are envisioned as being capable of engaging threats during different stages of their flight, including the boost, midcourse and glide phases. The Space Force has set an initial goal of demonstrating a capability integrated into the broader Golden Dome architecture by 2028. In April, Space Systems Command announced 20 Other Transaction Authority agreements involving 12 companies for the interceptor program. The agreements could have a combined potential value of up to $3.2 billion and are intended to maintain competition between established defense contractors and newer space companies. Northrop Grumman has separately reported completing important ground tests during 2026 as it works toward an on-orbit demonstration of a space-based interceptor in 2027. The company has partnered with Apex Space for that demonstration and said its efforts build on more than $1 billion in company-led investment in missile defense technology. SpaceX’s involvement in Golden Dome extends beyond the interceptor program itself. The company has also been selected for major elements of the broader architecture, including the Space Data Network backbone. That role adds to SpaceX’s expanding involvement in U.S. national security and military space programs. The Golden Dome initiative is among the Trump administration’s most ambitious proposed defense projects. The administration has described it as a comprehensive missile defense system that would combine space-based sensors, tracking technologies and interceptors. The Space Force has said the broader architecture is expected to incorporate next-generation tracking capabilities and artificial intelligence to help address increasingly fast and maneuverable missile threats. Despite the latest milestone, the program remains in an early stage of development. Companies must still demonstrate that their interceptor technologies can survive and operate effectively in orbit. Additional testing will then be required to evaluate increasingly complex mission scenarios and eventually demonstrate actual interception capabilities. Some details surrounding the program are expected to remain classified or undisclosed because of operational security concerns. The latest tests nevertheless provide an early indication that the companies involved are moving forward with the technologies envisioned for Golden Dome. For SpaceX and Northrop Grumman, the progress could strengthen their positions as the U.S. develops a new generation of space-based missile defense capabilities. The program also reflects the growing importance of commercial space companies in the development of advanced national security systems.
