SpaceX’s $60 billion cursor bet could fuel AI growth
### SpaceX’s $60 Billion Cursor Deal Could Create Major AI Revenue Stream

SpaceX’s reported $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind AI coding platform Cursor, could provide Elon Musk’s company with a significant new source of artificial intelligence revenue. Morgan Stanley analysts estimate that Cursor could contribute approximately $2.5 billion to SpaceX’s revenue in 2026 and potentially $13 billion in 2027. The analysts said the acquisition could strengthen the long-term valuation case for SpaceX if Cursor continues to expand at its current pace. SpaceX agreed in June to acquire Anysphere through an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. Under the proposed deal, Cursor would become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The acquisition follows an option SpaceX secured earlier in the year that gave the company the choice to acquire Cursor or establish a separate partnership with the AI startup. SpaceX ultimately chose to exercise the acquisition option, bringing the rapidly growing coding platform into its broader technology ecosystem. Cursor has emerged as a major AI-powered coding platform, competing with products developed by leading AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Its technology allows software developers to use artificial intelligence to write, modify, debug and manage computer code. The acquisition could give Cursor access to SpaceX’s growing computing infrastructure while providing SpaceX with a stronger presence in enterprise AI software. The deal also adds another layer to SpaceX’s expanding relationship with Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI. SpaceX and Cursor have previously worked together on AI models and have discussed releasing jointly trained technology through Cursor and xAI’s Grok Build platform. Morgan Stanley’s optimistic forecast comes as SpaceX increasingly expands beyond its traditional aerospace and satellite operations. The company has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, computing capacity and data centers as it searches for additional sources of growth. SpaceX has also been building an increasingly diverse technology ecosystem around its aerospace, satellite internet and AI businesses. Recent financial reporting indicated that SpaceX generated $7.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, representing a 92% increase from the previous year. Its AI-related revenue was reportedly around $2.56 billion during the period, highlighting the growing contribution of artificial intelligence to the company’s business. SpaceX has also projected an annualized revenue run rate of approximately $100 billion by the end of 2026. Against that backdrop, Morgan Stanley believes Cursor could become an important component of SpaceX’s expansion strategy. If the coding platform maintains its rapid growth, its contribution could become increasingly significant to SpaceX’s overall financial performance. The acquisition would also give SpaceX exposure to the rapidly expanding enterprise software market, where businesses are increasingly adopting AI-assisted development tools. For Cursor, joining SpaceX could provide access to significant computing resources and a much larger technology ecosystem. For SpaceX, the transaction represents a major bet that AI software can become a substantial business alongside rockets, satellites and communications. The $60 billion deal therefore goes beyond a conventional software acquisition and reflects Musk’s broader strategy of combining artificial intelligence, computing infrastructure and technology platforms. If Cursor meets the growth expectations outlined by Morgan Stanley, it could become one of the most important new revenue engines within SpaceX’s expanding technology empire.
