TSMC, Sony partner on nearly $5 billion next-generation image sensor project
### TSMC and Sony Commit $4.69 Billion to Next-Generation Image Sensors

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Sony have announced a $4.69 billion partnership to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors in Japan. The joint venture will be established in Kumamoto, southern Japan, with production expected to begin in 2029. Sony is set to invest approximately 465 billion yen, or about $2.92 billion, while TSMC will contribute around 282 billion yen, equivalent to roughly $1.77 billion. Together, the companies will provide about 747 billion yen in initial capital for the new manufacturing operation. The venture, named Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., will operate alongside TSMC’s existing Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing facility in Kumamoto. Sony will hold a controlling 60% stake in the new company, while TSMC will own the remaining 40%. Under the agreement, Sony will take the lead in product planning and design, while TSMC will provide advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology and expertise. The partnership is aimed at strengthening production of sophisticated image sensors used in smartphones, vehicles, robotics and other advanced electronic devices. The companies expect the new facility to help meet growing demand from automotive and robotics industries. Analysts say the structure could reduce the financial burden associated with large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investments for Sony. At the same time, TSMC would gain a stable source of manufacturing revenue through its involvement in the venture. Toyo Research Advice analyst Hideki Yasuda described the arrangement as a relatively low-risk investment for both companies. The partnership also marks a strategic shift for Sony, which has traditionally handled much of its image-sensor research, development and manufacturing internally. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki previously described the joint venture as the company’s first step toward becoming more “fab-light.” The move reflects a broader industry trend in which semiconductor companies are increasingly relying on specialized manufacturing partners. The two companies have already established a strong manufacturing relationship through Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, created in 2021 under TSMC’s control. That facility reached full-scale production by the end of 2024, marking an important milestone for Japan’s semiconductor industry. The latest venture could further strengthen Japan’s position in advanced chip manufacturing and sensor production. The companies are also considering additional funding to expand the planned production capacity. Japan’s government is expected to consider providing financial support for the project as part of its efforts to strengthen the country’s semiconductor supply chain. The announcement immediately lifted investor sentiment, with Sony shares rising 2.2% and TSMC shares gaining as much as 1.7%. The partnership underscores the growing importance of advanced image sensors as demand rises across smartphones, automobiles, robotics and other next-generation technologies.
