Kedar Mate named to Blue Shield of California board

Blue Shield of California has appointed Indian American healthcare quality and innovation leader Kedar S. Mate, MD, to its Board of Directors, adding more than two decades of experience in healthcare transformation, patient safety and medical innovation to the nonprofit health plan’s leadership. Mate currently serves as chief medical officer of Qualified Health AI, where he leads the company’s clinical vision and strategy for helping healthcare organizations adopt artificial intelligence safely and effectively. His appointment comes as healthcare providers and insurers increasingly explore AI technologies to improve clinical decision-making, efficiency and patient outcomes.

Before joining Qualified Health AI, Mate served as president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, a global organization focused on healthcare quality and patient safety. Throughout his career, he has worked across healthcare delivery, public policy, technology and innovation, advising organizations seeking to improve the quality and affordability of medical care. His experience includes work with major healthcare organizations, government agencies and international institutions, including the World Health Organization and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Blue Shield of California Board Chair Pamela DeCoste said Mate’s background as a physician, healthcare executive and innovator would bring valuable expertise to the organization as it works to improve affordability, accessibility and health outcomes for its members.

Mate has also been involved in initiatives focused on healthcare equity, patient safety and sustainable healthcare systems. His governance experience includes board and advisory roles with organizations such as MLK Community Health System, Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Center for Care Innovations. He has also contributed to the National Academy of Medicine’s Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct initiative, giving him experience at the intersection of healthcare and emerging technology. Mate said Blue Shield’s longstanding focus on improving health outcomes and creating a more affordable healthcare system was a major reason he was pleased to join its board. His appointment comes at a time when healthcare organizations are increasingly evaluating how artificial intelligence can be integrated into clinical and administrative systems while maintaining patient safety and public trust.

Mate’s experience in both traditional healthcare leadership and emerging AI technologies positions him to contribute to discussions around responsible innovation. Beyond his industry leadership, Mate is a senior scholar at Stanford University’s Clinical Excellence Research Center and continues to practice internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He also serves on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine, combining academic work with clinical experience and healthcare leadership. Mate earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School after completing a bachelor’s degree in American history at Brown University.

His diverse academic and professional background reflects a career focused on connecting medicine, technology, policy and healthcare improvement. His appointment to Blue Shield of California’s board adds another prominent Indian American voice to healthcare leadership in the United States.
