### SpaceX Prepares Starlink Mobile Push That Could Challenge U.S. Wireless Giants
SpaceX is preparing to expand Starlink beyond satellite broadband and enter the U.S. mobile communications market, potentially placing Elon Musk’s company in direct competition with established wireless operators such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. The planned expansion would represent a major change in Starlink’s business model, moving the service from primarily providing satellite connectivity toward offering consumers a broader mobile communications network. During the company’s first earnings call as a public company, President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said SpaceX expects to begin launching next-generation Starlink satellites in 2027. These satellites are expected to dramatically increase the capacity available for Starlink Mobile and enable the company to support more demanding mobile applications. SpaceX is also gaining access to additional wireless spectrum acquired from EchoStar, including approximately 65 MHz of spectrum that could become an important part of its mobile strategy. The company plans to supplement its satellite network with ground-based cellular infrastructure, potentially allowing Starlink to operate more like a conventional mobile carrier in areas where satellite capacity alone may not be sufficient.
Shotwell has indicated that SpaceX could deploy relatively small cellular base stations using equipment related to Starlink broadband installations, giving the company another way to extend network capacity. The approach would be different from Starlink’s existing Direct to Cell service, which has primarily focused on connecting compatible smartphones to satellites when traditional cellular coverage is unavailable. Starlink currently works with T-Mobile in the United States, allowing supported phones to connect through satellites in areas without terrestrial service.
The next generation of Starlink satellites, however, is expected to offer significantly greater capabilities, potentially supporting services such as video calls, streaming, email and other data-heavy applications directly on mobile devices. SpaceX has already established mobile-related partnerships in several international markets, including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the Philippines. A full-scale entry into the U.S. wireless market would nevertheless present a much larger challenge because SpaceX would need to compete against carriers with extensive terrestrial networks and established customer relationships.
One of Starlink’s biggest advantages is its ability to provide connectivity in remote locations where constructing traditional cellular towers can be expensive or difficult. However, building a nationwide mobile service would require substantial investment in spectrum, infrastructure, regulatory approvals and network capacity. T-Mobile executives have downplayed the threat from a standalone Starlink mobile service, arguing that satellite connectivity is more likely to complement traditional cellular networks than replace them.
The carrier has also pointed out that satellite connectivity currently represents only a small portion of overall network usage, suggesting that its primary value remains extending coverage into areas that conventional networks cannot easily reach. SpaceX, however, appears to see an opportunity to expand beyond that limited role as satellite technology improves.
