Humanoid robots now cleaning homes in San Francisco for $30

San Francisco-based startup Tau Robotics has launched a pilot service that brings humanoid robots into homes and offices to perform cleaning tasks, marking another step toward the future of AI-powered household automation. The company is offering the service at $30 per hour to a limited number of customers while testing whether humanoid robots can reliably handle everyday cleaning jobs. Although the robots appear to operate autonomously, they are currently supervised and guided by remote human operators who assist with navigation and decision-making in real time.

CEO Hans Koch explained that artificial intelligence has not yet advanced enough to allow robots to clean an entire home independently, making human oversight essential during this early phase. Demonstration videos released by the company show the robots vacuuming floors, wiping surfaces, and completing basic cleaning tasks before moving through different areas of a property.

Customers must remain at home throughout the cleaning session while operators remotely manage the robots using live video feeds. Unlike traditional robotic cleaners that follow pre-programmed paths, Tau Robotics' system combines AI with human judgment, enabling the robots to adapt to different room layouts and unexpected obstacles. The company believes this hybrid approach will accelerate the development of fully autonomous household robots in the future. Privacy has become another major concern because the robots continuously record video inside customers' homes, with the footage used to improve the company's AI systems.
