Fintech company Chime to lay off 10% its workforce amid AI push
Chime has announced plans to lay off approximately 10% of its workforce as the fintech company restructures its operations to improve efficiency and adapt to the growing impact of artificial intelligence. Around 150 employees will be affected as the company shifts toward a leaner organizational structure with smaller, faster-moving teams.

CEO and co-founder Chris Britt said AI is changing how work gets done and requires employees to develop new skills while enabling companies to accomplish more with fewer people. He emphasized that flatter management structures and improved operational discipline are essential for driving long-term growth and profitability as Chime continues its journey as a public company. The layoffs come ahead of the company's upcoming quarterly earnings report and follow a year in which its stock has struggled despite its successful public listing.

Chime, which employs about 1,500 people, said the restructuring is intended to accelerate innovation while maintaining financial discipline. The move reflects a broader trend across the financial technology industry, where companies are increasingly using artificial intelligence to automate tasks, streamline operations, and reduce costs. Several major financial firms have recently announced similar workforce reductions. Visa is cutting thousands of jobs across its technology and product divisions, while Mastercard has also reduced staffing as part of its restructuring efforts.

Jack Dorsey's Block previously announced large-scale layoffs, citing productivity improvements driven by AI, and Robinhood recently eliminated about 10% of its workforce to simplify decision-making and improve efficiency. These developments highlight how AI is reshaping employment across the fintech sector, with companies focusing on automation and leaner business models to remain competitive. Although AI is creating opportunities for innovation and faster execution, it is also changing workforce requirements and increasing demand for specialized technical skills.

Chime's decision illustrates how public companies are balancing technological advancement with cost management in an increasingly competitive market. Despite the workforce reduction, the company remains focused on expanding its digital banking platform and strengthening its financial performance following its multibillion-dollar IPO. The restructuring signals a broader transformation in the financial services industry, where artificial intelligence is becoming a key driver of business strategy, productivity, and organizational change.
