Elon Musk says Grok 4.6 is weeks away, Grok 4.7 to follow soon

Elon Musk has outlined the next phase of xAI’s artificial intelligence roadmap, revealing that two upgraded versions of its Grok model are expected to arrive within weeks of each other as the company accelerates its challenge to the industry's leading AI developers. According to Musk, Grok 4.6 is tentatively scheduled for release in early August and will introduce substantial improvements in supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning—two key techniques used to make AI models more accurate, reliable, and responsive. A more powerful successor, Grok 4.7, is expected to follow shortly afterward with a significantly larger architecture designed to deliver stronger overall performance while improving token efficiency, even if response times become slightly slower.

The announcement reflects xAI’s aggressive strategy of rapidly refining its flagship models at a time when competition among AI companies is intensifying. Rather than focusing solely on increasing model size, developers are increasingly optimizing reasoning abilities, coding performance, inference efficiency, and operational costs. Musk indicated that the newer Grok models are intended to balance greater computational power with improved efficiency, an area that has become increasingly important as AI systems process billions of user requests every day. Better token efficiency could reduce infrastructure costs while allowing more complex tasks to be handled with fewer computing resources.

Although Musk has shared an expected timeline, xAI has not yet published official benchmarks, feature comparisons, or a detailed release schedule, leaving room for potential changes before launch.
