Alphabet shares fall as AI spending increases, worrying investors
Alphabet's shares declined on Thursday despite reporting strong quarterly earnings, as investors focused on the company's rapidly increasing spending on artificial intelligence and the long-term returns from those investments.

Google's parent company posted $119 billion in second-quarter revenue, marking a strong year-over-year increase, while its cloud business delivered robust growth as demand for AI-powered services continued to accelerate. The company also revealed that Gemini now serves more than 950 million monthly users, highlighting the growing adoption of its AI platform.

However, investor attention shifted toward Alphabet's updated spending plans. The company raised its projected AI investment for the year, citing the need to expand computing capacity, build additional data centers, and strengthen cloud infrastructure to support rising demand for AI applications.

Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said the increased investment is necessary to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence services, while company executives noted that a significant share of spending is being directed toward servers and next-generation computing infrastructure.

Although analysts praised Alphabet's strong cloud performance and continued growth in AI-related businesses, several investment firms lowered their price targets, reflecting concerns that higher capital expenditures could weigh on short-term profitability. Most analysts, however, maintained positive ratings, expressing confidence in the company's long-term AI strategy.

The market reaction reflects a broader trend across the technology sector, where investors are increasingly evaluating whether massive AI investments will generate sustainable financial returns. Companies including Tesla, Meta, and other major technology firms have also experienced stock volatility as they expand spending on AI, semiconductors, and advanced computing.

Despite the decline in its share price, Alphabet remains one of the leading players in the global AI race, with continued investments in cloud computing, custom AI chips, and large language models expected to shape its future growth.

The company's latest results underscore the growing challenge facing technology giants—balancing aggressive AI expansion with investor expectations for profitability and disciplined spending.
