Chinese CEO leaves US to launch successful AI startup despite ‘many opportunities’
Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has temporarily halted new subscriptions for its flagship Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model after an unexpected surge in demand overwhelmed the company's computing capacity. The move highlights the growing global interest in advanced AI systems and the infrastructure challenges that come with rapid adoption.

The Beijing-based company said existing subscribers will continue to receive uninterrupted access while it expands its computing resources and upgrades its subscription services. The temporary pause comes only days after the launch of Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight language model designed for coding, reasoning, and AI agent applications.

Moonshot claims Kimi K3 can compete with leading AI models developed by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, positioning the startup as one of China's strongest contenders in the global AI race. The overwhelming demand for the model underscores the increasing appetite for powerful generative AI tools among developers and businesses.

Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former Google Brain researcher and Carnegie Mellon University graduate, Moonshot has rapidly emerged as one of China's fastest-growing AI companies. Reports indicate the company is preparing for a potential Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) with support from major investment banks.

Recent online speculation suggested Yang returned to China because of U.S. immigration challenges. However, his former Ph.D. advisor, Professor Russ Salakhutdinov, dismissed those claims, stating that Yang had several opportunities to remain in the United States, including potential roles at leading technology companies. According to Salakhutdinov, Yang chose to return home because he was determined to build his own AI startup and pursue entrepreneurship.

As competition in artificial intelligence continues to intensify, Moonshot's rapid growth reflects China's expanding influence in the global AI industry. The company's ability to scale its infrastructure while maintaining performance will be closely watched as it prepares for its next phase of growth and possible public listing.
