FIFA World Cup 2026 prize money hits record $871 million, biggest payout in tournament history
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to become the most rewarding tournament in football history, with FIFA announcing a record prize pool of $871 million for the 48 participating nations. The expanded competition, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks a new era for the world's biggest sporting event.

Every team qualifying for the tournament will receive significant financial support before the opening match. FIFA has allocated $10 million in qualification funding along with $2.5 million for tournament preparations, ensuring each nation begins the competition with at least $12.5 million in guaranteed funding. Additional assistance will also be provided to cover travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses.

The biggest reward awaits the team that lifts the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy. The champions will earn a record $50 million in performance prize money, taking their total earnings to more than $63.5 million when qualification and preparation funding are included.

The tournament runners-up will receive $33 million, while the third- and fourth-place finishers will earn $29 million and $27 million, respectively. Teams reaching the quarterfinals will collect $19 million, Round of 16 participants will receive $15 million, and Round of 32 teams will take home $11 million. Nations exiting in the group stage will still receive $9 million in performance-based rewards.

The increased prize money reflects FIFA's expanding commercial success through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and the introduction of a 48-team format that brings more matches and greater global viewership. FIFA believes the enhanced financial distribution will strengthen football development across member nations while rewarding teams for their performances on the world's biggest stage.
