Google employees call for layoff protections, Submit 4,500-signature petition to CEO Sundar Pichai
Google employees rally for stronger job protections amid ongoing tech layoffs

More than 100 Google employees gathered outside the company’s Mountain View headquarters to demand stronger job protections as layoffs continue to impact the technology industry. The demonstration highlighted growing concerns among workers, who say ongoing uncertainty about job security is affecting morale and making it more difficult to focus on innovation.

During the rally, representatives of the Alphabet Workers Union submitted a petition signed by more than 4,500 employees to CEO Sundar Pichai and other senior executives. The petition calls for improved layoff protections, including guaranteed severance packages, an end to performance-based quotas, and the option for employees to receive severance as extended paid leave instead of a lump-sum payment.

Union leaders said the demands are intended to create a more stable work environment where employees can focus on developing new products and technologies without the constant fear of losing their jobs. They argued that uncertainty surrounding layoffs has weakened collaboration and created additional stress across teams.

Speaking at the event, Alphabet Workers Union President Parul Koul said employees want a workplace built on security and trust rather than fear and competition. She said workers should be encouraged to share ideas, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to innovation without worrying about their employment status.

The protest comes as technology companies continue restructuring their workforces to reduce costs while increasing investments in artificial intelligence. Although Google has previously described its workforce adjustments as necessary for long-term growth, many employees believe stronger protections are needed to maintain productivity and workplace confidence during periods of organizational change.

The demonstration reflects broader concerns across the technology sector, where layoffs have become increasingly common despite continued investments in AI and digital transformation. Employee groups argue that greater transparency, predictable severance policies, and improved communication can help companies retain talent while maintaining trust during periods of restructuring.

Whether Google introduces changes in response to the petition remains uncertain, but the rally underscores the growing importance of job security as one of the key issues facing employees across the technology industry.
