Indian American high school graduate from Florida sets historic grade point average record

Indian American student Vaibhav Bhaskar has made academic history after graduating from George M. Steinbrenner High School in Florida with a record-breaking **11.99 weighted GPA**, the highest ever recorded in the state. His remarkable achievement surpassed the previous Florida record and has prompted the Hillsborough County School District to revise its grading system for future graduating classes.

Bhaskar earned the unprecedented GPA by completing an exceptionally rigorous academic schedule that included **44 advanced courses**, comprising 20 Advanced Placement (AP) classes and 24 dual-enrollment college courses through Hillsborough Community College and the University of Florida. Alongside his high school diploma, he also graduated with an associate degree, reflecting years of disciplined academic commitment and careful planning.

Beyond academics, Bhaskar built an impressive record of leadership and community involvement. He founded an investment club, captained his school's mock trial team, served as chief financial officer of a student-led nonprofit organization and co-authored two published research papers focusing on financial risk analysis and environmental conservation. He also completed internships in finance and real estate while leading his school's South Asian Student Association, balancing extracurricular achievements with an intensive course load.

Bhaskar credits much of his success to personal motivation and consistent effort rather than external pressure. His father, a scientist and cancer researcher, emphasized that the family encouraged curiosity and allowed him to set his own academic goals. Looking ahead, Bhaskar will attend **Duke University**, where he plans to pursue a double major in economics and public policy while continuing his passion for leadership and public service.

His historic accomplishment has also led to lasting policy changes within the school district. Beginning with the graduating Class of 2027, Hillsborough County will introduce a capped Honors Point Average system, preventing future students from accumulating similarly high weighted GPAs. Despite setting a state record, Bhaskar has encouraged students to focus on meaningful learning and personal growth rather than pursuing grades alone, saying genuine education should always take priority over numerical achievements.
